In a move that signals a significant expansion of its business model, Indian online travel booking platform Ixigo has officially entered the packaged tours market. On Tuesday, the company’s rail-focused subsidiary, Ixigo Trains, launched Ixigo Bharat Darshan—a new platform feature designed to let users discover, plan, and book curated spiritual and family travel itineraries.

Rather than building a complex supply chain of hotels, tour guides, and transport logistics from scratch, Ixigo is taking an asset-light, low-risk approach. The travel platform has partnered with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the state-owned public sector undertaking that dominates India’s railway tourism sector, to source and distribute its existing domestic tour packages.

For Ixigo, this launch represents a major milestone in its product evolution, shifting from a pure-play transport utility app to a comprehensive holiday ecosystem. If successful, packaged tours could become the next high-margin growth engine for the Gurugram-headquartered Online Travel Agency (OTA).

A Strategic Pivot to Integrated Travel

Historically, Ixigo’s core value proposition has centered on facilitating individual, point-to-point travel components. Millions of travelers across India rely on the platform daily to search for and purchase standalone train tickets, flights, bus journeys, and hotel bookings.

The launch of Ixigo Bharat Darshan marks the first time these disparate travel elements are being bundled into unified, multi-day itineraries on the Ixigo app.

“We have never got into packages before. We were always into individual components, like flight, bus or hotels,” Dinesh Kumar Kotha, Chief Executive Officer of Ixigo Trains and ConfirmTkt, told Skift. “This is the first step in that journey.”

By aggregating IRCTC’s pre-packaged tours, Ixigo can offer its users end-to-end travel solutions—including train travel, local transfers, sightseeing, meals, and accommodation—all under a single booking flow. This integration eliminates the friction of planning a multi-city vacation, which historically required travelers to visit multiple websites, align booking dates manually, and manage disjointed reservation receipts.

The Asset-Light Model: Leveraging IRCTC’s Infrastructure

Building a domestic holiday package business from the ground up is notoriously difficult and capital-intensive. It requires establishing direct relationships with local hoteliers, contracting transport operators, hiring local tour guides, and managing the operational risks of trip cancellations, delays, and customer disputes.

By partnering with IRCTC, Ixigo bypasses these operational headaches entirely. IRCTC already operates a vast network of tourist trains, dedicated holiday packages, and spiritual tours under various government-backed initiatives. Ixigo’s primary role in this partnership is that of a digital distributor and user-experience facilitator.

The company has built a dedicated, highly intuitive user interface tailored to showcase IRCTC’s specialized tour offerings. This allows Ixigo to test consumer demand for holiday packages with minimal upfront capital investment.

The strategy is focused on iterative learning. Ixigo plans to closely monitor booking patterns, search behaviors, and direct customer feedback to determine how comfortable its user base is with buying high-value, pre-packaged tours online. If the pilot demonstrates strong conversion rates, the company will have a clear, data-backed mandate to expand deeper into the packaged travel sector.

Capitalizing on India’s Spiritual and Family Tourism Boom

The decision to launch Ixigo Bharat Darshan with a heavy emphasis on spiritual and family-centric itineraries is deeply aligned with current Indian domestic travel trends.

In post-pandemic India, religious and spiritual tourism—often referred to as faith-based travel—has experienced an unprecedented boom. Government initiatives to upgrade infrastructure around major pilgrimage sites, such as the redevelopment of Varanasi, the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, and the promotion of the Char Dham Yatra, have turned these destinations into major economic drivers.

According to various industry reports, spiritual tourism now accounts for a massive share of domestic tourist footprints in India. These journeys are rarely undertaken alone; they are typically multi-generational family affairs involving elderly relatives, parents, and children.

For these demographics, organized group travel is highly preferred. The logistics of navigating crowded pilgrimage towns, securing reliable local transport, and finding hygienic, family-friendly accommodations can be overwhelming for individual travelers. A pre-curated package backed by the trusted, state-run IRCTC brand provides peace of mind—a critical purchasing factor for family decision-makers.

Bridging the Digital Divide for Next-Billion Users

Ixigo’s unique market positioning makes it the ideal candidate to bring these traditional offline packages into the digital age. While premium OTAs in India have historically targeted affluent, metro-dwelling travelers looking for international flights and luxury stays, Ixigo and its subsidiary ConfirmTkt have built their empires by catering to the "Next Billion Users" residing in India’s Tier-2, Tier-3, and Tier-4 cities.

These users are highly reliant on train travel as their primary mode of long-distance transport. They are already highly active on Ixigo’s mobile apps, utilizing them for train tracking, PNR status updates, and seat bookings.

By embedding IRCTC’s Bharat Darshan packages directly into the Ixigo interface, the platform is introducing curated holiday packages to a massive, highly captive audience that already trusts the brand. For many of these users, booking a comprehensive holiday package online was previously inaccessible or overly complicated. Ixigo’s simplified booking flow bridges this digital divide, making organized travel accessible to a broader demographic.

The Financial Playbook: Moving Up the Value Chain

From a financial perspective, the foray into packaged tours is a logical step in Ixigo’s post-IPO growth strategy.

Train ticketing, while highly transactional and excellent for driving massive user acquisition, is a low-margin business characterized by strict government-regulated caps on convenience fees. Flights and budget hotels offer slightly better returns, but they remain highly competitive and price-sensitive segments.

Holiday packages, on the other hand, represent the upper echelon of profitability in the travel distribution sector. They command significantly higher average transaction values (ATVs) and offer healthier commission structures.

By introducing packaged tours to its existing user base, Ixigo can significantly increase its Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). The cost of acquiring these customers has already been amortized through their use of Ixigo’s utility tools (such as train tracking and flight booking). Cross-selling them a high-value Bharat Darshan package allows Ixigo to extract far greater lifetime value (LTV) from its existing user ecosystem, boosting overall corporate margins.

What Lies Ahead: From Distribution to Direct Operations?

As Ixigo rolls out the Bharat Darshan feature, the travel industry will be watching closely to see how quickly the platform’s user base adopts these bundled offerings.

If the pilot proves successful, it could pave the way for a more aggressive expansion strategy. Over time, Ixigo could transition from merely distributing IRCTC packages to co-curating exclusive itineraries with local operators, or even building out its own proprietary, vertically integrated holiday division.

For now, however, the focus remains on collaboration, technology integration, and customer feedback. By leveraging IRCTC’s unmatched physical infrastructure and combining it with its own cutting-edge digital reach and user-centric design, Ixigo has positioned itself to capture a significant share of India’s rapidly growing domestic holiday market.
